Ingredients
  

  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour sifted
  • 1 ¾ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 2 large eggs room temperature
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • ½ cup whole milk room temperature
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch square cake pan.
  • In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt; set aside.
  • In a large mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Beat in eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  • Stir in vanilla extract.
  • Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, alternating with milk, beginning and ending with the dry mixture.
  • Mix just until batter is smooth.
  • Pour batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top.
  • Bake for 30–40 minutes, or until the top springs back when lightly touched and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Allow to cool completely in the pan before slicing.

Notes

  • For an extra-moist cake, replace half the milk with sour cream.
  • Dust with powdered sugar for a simple finish, or frost with your favorite icing.
  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
