Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter softened
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract

Instructions

  • In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the sugar, cocoa powder, and flour until no lumps remain.
  • Slowly whisk in the milk until the mixture is smooth and fully combined.
  • Transfer the mixture to a saucepan and cook over medium heat, whisking constantly, until it thickens to a gravy consistency, about 7–10 minutes.
  • Remove from heat and stir in the butter and vanilla until melted and smooth.
  • Serve warm over biscuits, pancakes, waffles, or your favorite breakfast bread.

Notes

  • Sift cocoa and flour before mixing for an extra-smooth sauce.
  • Adjust sweetness by adding more or less sugar to taste.
  • Keep heat moderate to prevent scorching the milk.
